having trouble with BlackBerry® email

If you've discovered that your BlackBerry® Smartphone is not sending or receiving Emails, our trouble shooting guide below should help you.

The most common reasons associated with BlackBerry® email problems are below, we'll look at each one in more detail.

Insufficient signal

It sounds obvious, but the most common reason for Emails not being sent or received is because the network signal in the area is not strong enough.  The networks are spending lots of money to constantly improve their networks to help solve problem just like this.  You can check the signal strength in your area by doing the following on your handset:

Ideally, the lower the number the better.  Try moving around to see if the signal strength changes.

It's true, if your BlackBerry® Smartphone is set to the incorrect time and date, it can have an effect on your Emails.  You can check and set the time & date by doing the following:

To check to see if this has fixed the Email problem.  It is best to turn the mobile off for a minute or so, and then switch it back on.  If your Emails are still not being sent / received, continue trouble shooting below.

Incorrect Network Settings

Occasionally the signal on your handset can drop out or lose strength, and sometimes because of simple reasons like the handset being switched on for long periods of time.  So simply switching it off for a couple of minutes, and back on again quite often solves the problem.

However sometimes the reason can be a bit more sinister and requires a slightly more technical fix.  It's worth just checking to make sure that the handset is still looking for a good signal, and to do that is simple.

Once these setting have all me checked or adjusted, its a good idea to switch the handset off for a minute or two, then switching it back on.

If you notice that your Emails are working fine until you open your Email application on your computer, it could just be the redirection settings.

What is redirection?  Well, when an e-mail account is set up on a computer and a mobile phone, sometimes It will only be received once, and usually on the computer.  This is because when the computer is switched off, the e-mails cannot be received so the Email account looks for the next device with the same Email account instead.  When the computer is turned on, the Emails start to filter through, and so they don't need to look for any other devices to receive the Emails.  *Note in this scenario, you should still be able to send Emails from your mobile and your computer.

Redirection allows users to receive Emails in 2 places at the same time and this can be done in a couple of ways.  The best way to do this is directly on the Blackberry® desktop manager.  Once you open the desktop manager, double click on Redirector Settings and make sure that Redirect incoming messages to your handheld is checked.
